Still following the fortunes of Oprah and Obama:
A poll conducted in mid-September by Pew Research Center for People and the Press tried to assess the impact of Oprah Winfrey’s May endorsement of Illinois Senator Barack Obama for President.
Pew Research generally regards Oprah as more influential than most celebrities, ranking her “on a par with Bill Gates.” Nevertheless, poll numbers indicated that 69% said knowing that Oprah endorsed a candidate would not affect how they themselves voted, but 60% also said they thought her support would help his candidacy.
Among those who said her endorsement would influence them, the split was 50/50 between positive and negative influence.
Geneva Chapman, writing recently in The Sojourner’s Truth, a Toledo newspaper, is disappointed at Oprah not backing the woman in the race, and is unsure about the effect if her endorsement is successful and Obama is elected: Would his association with a powerful businesswoman dog him like V.P. Cheney’s connections to Halliburton? Will Obama retain the support of women if he defeats the favored female candidate and gets the nomination? And given that scenario, will he solve the problem by choosing a woman as a running mate?
All good questions that will be answered in the months to come.
