There are days in every administrative professional’s life when the routine gets, well, routine. It’s times like this when you can remind yourself that it takes a special person to persevere. And that perseverance is one of the qualities that defines success.
Examples are all around you of people who couldn’t hack the administrative life like you can. Take that Louisiana woman who, in 1977, tried paralegal
work in a law firm. She was 19 years old and even though she was bright, and observant, and even had a great sense of humor, it wasn’t enough, and Ellen DeGeneres had to move on to another line of work.
Or that New York woman who started as a typist in a vacuum brake company in New York City a few decades ago and then quickly gave it up. Lucky for her, she had a little bit of a voice or Ethel Merman would have been out of luck.
And how about that little guy who came to New York from California in the late 50’s and for a time spent his days typing names, addresses and phone numbers for the Yellow Pages directory. All it took was somebody to notice some of the acting he was doing on the side, and right away Dustin Hoffman wasn’t typing anymore.
In their own ways, of course, these three learned the lesson of perseverance after their brief administrative careers and came to the same conclusion all professionals do—it works.
